Boyds, Md., (10/2/19) – An ACL tear is one of the most common but devastating injuries an athlete can endure. Tearing the infamous cruciate ligament most commonly puts athletes in a difficult rehabilitative period for at least six months, but usually leaves athletes out of competitive play for about one year.
During her rookie year, Ship was acquired by Washington from Reign FC. During her inaugural NWSL season, Ship played 688 minutes over 14 games, recording one goal and two assists before until her year was abruptly ended by an ACL tear on August 26.
Ship, like many athletes, powered through the trials and tribulations of the lengthy recovery process for over a year, dealing with mental and physical frustrations along the way.
Ship returned to play for the Spirit 364 days later on August 25, 2018. Her first game back from injury was the Spirit’s first-ever game at Audi Field. In her second game back with the Spirit, Ship scored against Sky Blue FC in the final game of 2018 at the SoccerPlex.
After scoring her first goal back from injury, Ship said: “I’m just so happy to be back out there, y’know? It’s been a long, long journey… I’m just so grateful for everyone who helped me along the way… I don’t think I could have done it without the support of this club.”
This season Ship has shown the progress she has made since her injury and has displayed the characteristics that influenced the Spirit to acquire her in 2017.
The 24-year-old from Westlake Village, CA has played in the role of an impact sub for the Spirit this year, logging 270 minutes over 7 matches this season. Additionally, Ship has made three starts for the Spirit.
Ship has tallied two assists on the year, including this pass to Rose Lavelle, which led to a game-winning goal over the North Carolina Courage.

Ship and the Spirit will travel to Orlando to take on the Pride on Saturday, Oct. 5. The match will be streaming online on Monumental Sports and will be televised on NBC Sports Washington.
