Boyds, MD (October 9, 2017) – Washington Spirit fans and media have voted forward Mallory Pugh as the club’s 2017 Most Valuable Player. In addition, Pugh has earned the club’s Golden Boot Award, leading the Spirit with six goals during her standout rookie season.
After signing with the Spirit in May, the 19-year-old U.S. international sparked the Washington attack with several signature performances, starting on June 3 against the Houston Dash when she nutmegged the keeper for her first professional goal. [WATCH]
She went on to record her first career brace July 8 against the Orlando Pride, which included a 90th minute equalizer from the penalty spot.
Pugh’s first career assist came on August 26 in a game against the Chicago Red Stars, when she sent a free kick into the box, connecting with Cheyna Williams in front of the post to set up a point blank header for an equalizer in the 81st minute.
She scored her first NWSL game-winning goal on Sept. 10 in a dramatic second-half comeback against Sky Blue FC, and finished the season with another two-goal performance in the season finale on Sept. 30 against Seattle Reign FC.
Pugh finished just ahead of Williams and Havana Solaun, who tied for second on the team with five goals each, for the Golden Boot Award.
