Los Angeles, Calif. (08/16/2026) – The Washington Spirit settled for a 1-1 road draw with Angel City FC on Sunday night. Forward Trinity Rodman tallied the Spirit’s lone goal, her tenth of the season.
Angel City started the match on the front foot, tallying four shots from Prisca Chilufya, Claire Emslie and Ally Sentnor through the opening 15 minutes of action. The Spirit responded over the next sixth of the match, maintaining 71 percent possession and taking four shots of its own. In the 24th minute, Rodman entered the left side of the box and fired a hard shot off the post for Washington’s first big attacking chance of the match. Five minutes later, midfielder Hal Hershfelt placed a shot of her own on frame to force a save from Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson.
Shortly after, Angel City appeared to have taken the lead late in the first half off the foot of Ally Sentnor but a VAR review overturned the play due to a handball by LA in the play’s leadup. Both sides traded one more shot apiece before the halftime whistle.
Defender Esme Morgan entered the match to start the second half in place of Gabrielle Carle on the back line. The Spirit kept pressing in the attack to begin the final 45, earning 78 percent possession over the first 15 minutes of the second half. Rodman and defender Tara Rudd each had attempts in the box but weren’t able to land one on frame until the 65th minute. Rudd found Rodman up field with a pass into the final third and Rodman did the rest. Driving into the box, Rodman fired a shot over the keeper and into the top netting for her tenth goal of the season and a 1-0 Spirit lead.
The Spirit and Angel City traded two substitutions apiece over the next ten minutes before forward Ashley Hatch joined the action in the 83rd minute. Hatch entered the match for midfielder Andi Sullivan, making her first appearance in nearly 15 months in her return from maternity leave. Hatch is the all-time leading scorer in Spirit history with 59 regular season goals.
In the 85th minute, Angel City brought the match level thanks to an outside-the-box strike from Sentnor. The long-distance shot found its way to the top right corner of the frame and marked Sentnor’s first goal with LA.
Washington looked for a winner throughout the final minutes of the match with Rudd taking a shot on target from close-range in the first minute of stoppage time that was saved by Anderson. Late in stoppage time, Rodman sent a sharp cross to Hatch in the box for one last attacking chance but her shot went wide of the frame. Shortly after, the final whistle blew as Washington and Angel City took a point apiece and the Spirit returned to second place on the table.
Next up, the Spirit will return home to face the Orlando Pride for Washington’s Love is Loud: Pride match. Kicking off at 4 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 23, the match will air on ESPN2.
