Former first-round pick signs new three-year contract.

Washington, D.C. (02/16/2023) – Washington Spirit midfielder Dorian Bailey has re-signed with the team on a new three-year contract, the club announced today. The new contract will take effect immediately, replacing Bailey’s current contract which contained a recently-exercised 2023 team option.

Bailey’s re-signing will keep together a strong Spirit midfield as the side looks to return to its 2021 championship form. Bailey appeared in 17 total matches for the Spirit in 2022, totaling over 1,300 minutes of action. In her first four years with the club, Bailey played over 5,300 minutes across 72 total contests.

“I’m really excited for these next few years with the Spirit,” said Bailey. “Everyone has been working tirelessly to make the Spirit the best we can be. I’m very grateful and can’t wait to bring another championship home!”

Originally from Mission, Kansas, Bailey was drafted by the Spirit out of the University of North Carolina with the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NWSL Draft. In four seasons with the Tar Heels, Bailey scored 17 goals and added 17 assists in 85 match appearances while earning All-ACC honors in 2015 (Freshman Team), 2017 (Second Team) and 2018 (Third Team). Bailey was also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in each of her four years in Chapel Hill.

“Dorian is a very important player for how our team wants to play,” said Head Coach Mark Parsons. “In possession, she is intelligent with positioning and can solve problems on the dribble or through combination play. Defensively, she wants to get pressure and help us win the ball back in important areas. I am looking forward to seeing Dorian continue to improve her strengths and be key to our style of play.”
