Washington, D.C., (02/03/2022) – The Washington Spirit have agreed to terms with the club’s head athletic trainer Alessandro Ciarla and assistant athletic trainer Summer Jones to be the latest full-time additions to the staff, the club announced today.

Ciarla and Jones were both contracted through Inova Health System during the 2021 season. Ciarla was hired as the Spirit’s head athletic trainer in May 2021 while Jones was added to the staff as an assistant athletic trainer the following June.

Spirit Head Coach Kris Ward on the move: “Alessandro and Summer played a vital role in keeping our players prepared and healthy throughout our championship season. We’re all very happy to be keeping a trusted part of our club around.”

Alessandro Ciarla worked as an athletic training assistant at Howard University and Georgetown University and as the director of sports performance and rehabilitation at Arrington Training & Development before joining the Spirit last spring. He was also an athletic training intern with the Spirit and Portland Thorns during the 2017 and 2019 seasons, respectively. Ciarla graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2014 and earned his Master’s degree in Athletic Training from Salisbury University in 2020.

Summer Jones entered her role with the Spirit having prior athletic training experience across a variety of sports at Appalachian State University, the University of Virginia, Southern Illinois University and the Ohio State University. After graduating from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science in 2013 and Athletic Training in 2017, Jones earned her Master’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from Southern Illinois University in 2020. She is certified as a Corrective Exercise Specialist by the National Academy of Sports Medicine and also certified in dry needling.
