Washington, D.C., (12/10/21) – The Washington Spirit has announced its protected and unprotected player lists ahead of the upcoming NWSL Expansion Draft presented by Ally featuring Angel City FC and San Diego Wave FC. The Draft will take place on December 16 at 7 pm ET.

Earlier this month, the Spirit completed a trade with San Diego Wave FC that granted the Spirit full protection in the upcoming Expansion Draft, meaning San Diego will not take any players from the Spirit. The Spirit also completed a trade with Angel City FC for protection against any of the Spirit’s three U.S. federation players (Kelley O’Hara, Emily Sonnett, Andi Sullivan) from being selected.

Players on the protected list are those who are not eligible to be drafted by Angel City FC in the Expansion Draft. The remaining players are considered unprotected and are eligible to be drafted. The Spirit was allowed to protect a maximum of 9 players (not including the three allocated players mentioned above), and Angel City FC can select one player from Washington’s unprotected list.
