Leesburg, Va., (01/26/21) – The Washington Spirit have completed a transfer with Göteborg FC for midfielder Julia Roddar. Upon acquiring Roddar, the Spirit have signed her to a two-year contract.

“Adding another full international to the ranks of our 2021 squad this year was always my intention, and getting someone of the quality of Julia Roddar made that acquisition even sweeter,” said Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke. “She is another player who is a serial winner, having finished as champions of the Swedish league last year playing alongside Emily Sonnett for Goteborg/Kopparsburg FC.”

Burke continued: “Bringing Julia to the Spirit means we now have more players with World Cup experience on our team. She is also one of those incredibly versatile players who can fit in comfortably in several key roles for our club. Watching Julia play last season only reinforced that she was exactly the type of player we were looking for and we recognized very quickly that she is someone who ideally fits our preferred style of play. I’m really looking forward to welcoming her to our club and can’t wait to get her on board soon.”

The 28-year-old was born in Falun, Sweden. Roddar joined Göteborg in 2017 and played 70 matches for the club over three years. During that time, she started 63 games, scored seven goals and added seven more assists. Prior to Göteborg, she played four years for Kvarnsvedens IK after graduating college. At Kvarnsvedens IK, she appeared in 58 matches, starting 54. Roddar scored three goals and added five assists.

After playing in all 20 games her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin, Roddar transferred to Florida Gulf Coast University. In her three seasons for the Eagles, Roddar started all 62 games she appeared in, scoring four goals and adding 10 assists.

Roddar is a member of the Swedish National Team and has made seven appearances for the senior team. Most recently, Roddar joined the national team at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. She also appeared on the U-19 and U-17 teams where she played in 30 matches, recording five goals.

Spirit CEO and Director of Sporting Operations Larry Best had this to say on the signing: “We’re very happy to have Julia joining the Spirit family. As a proven International she will bring great value to our squad both on and off the field so we’re excited to have another player of that caliber joining our team and club.”
