Boyds, Md., (1/2/20) – The Washington Spirit have signed defender Brooke Hendrix. Per club and league policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The powerful center back is coming to the United States after a successful stint with English club West Ham United FC. Hendrix played in 35 games across her two years at the club, including an appearance in West Ham’s FA Cup final in 2019.

Before moving to West Ham, Hendrix anchored the defense for Serie A Women’s side Brescia in Italy. The defender earned 23 caps during 2017-2018 season, scoring two goals and adding two assists from the backline. Hendrix played a crucial role in Brescia’s second-place league finish in which they tied league-winner Juventus in points, but fell short of the title after a playoff penalty shoot-out.

During her time in Italy, Hendrix also contributed to Brescia’s runner-up finish in the Coppa Italia, Round of 16 Women’s Champions League run, and their 2017 Women’s Super Cup win.

The defender has also enjoyed stints with Scottish Women’s Premier League club Rangers in Scotland, Swiss Nationalliga A side FC Staad and Úrvalsdeild Kvenna outfit Fylkir FC in Iceland. Hendrix also excelled for the Atlanta Silverbacks in the Women’s Premier Soccer League club in 2016, helping the squad win the Southeast Division title.

Collegiately, Hendrix played for the University of Southern Mississippi where she featured in 71 matches across four years for the Lady Eagles. During her time in Mississippi, the defender also contributed on offense, scoring seven goals.

Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke said this on the signing: “Brooke is someone we’ve been tracking for quite some time & we’ve been particularly impressed by a number of strong defensive performances at West Ham during the 2019/20 WSL season.”

Burke continued: “She is just the type of defender we’ve been looking to add to the squad and really fits the profile of players we want to bring to the club. She is a versatile & competitive defender and will certainly give us the option of looking at a different tactical set up this season. Brooke’s arrival definitely raises the level of competition and she is someone I’m very much looking forward to integrating into the squad quickly once she arrives.”
