Boyds, Md., (12/17/19) – The Washington Spirit have signed forward Jenna Hellstrom. Per club and league policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hellstrom played collegiately at Kent State University and quickly became one of the most heralded players on the team as she was named MAC Freshman of the Year after scoring five goals and recording five assists in 16 appearances during her first year of play.

During the forward’s sophomore year, she finished the season as the leading scorer on the team with seven goals. As a junior, Hellstrom scored eleven goals and recorded twelve assists in 20 appearances. During Hellstrom’s senior campaign, she scored 14 goals, earned 10 assists, and notched 38 points. Hellstrom led the MAC conference in both assists and points that year.

Hellstrom is the all-time leader in 12 different career and single-season categories at Kent State, including goals (37), assists (33), game-winning goals (17) and points (107). Hellstrom also became the first-ever NSCAA All-American in Kent State history after leading the team to its first-ever MAC championship.

Professionally, Hellstrom has played exclusively in the Damallsvenskan, the highest division of women’s soccer in Sweden. The forward began professional play in 2017 with FC Rosengard, where she won the Ladies Swedish Cup. From 2017 to 2019, Hellstrom has appeared for Djurgårdens IF, Växjö DFF and KIF Örebro.

Internationally, Hellstrom has made four appearances for the Canadian National Team after receiving her first call-up in November of 2017. Hellstrom joined the CWNT for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke had this to say about the signing: “Jenna will certainly fit our style of play and give us plenty of options on both flanks going into the 2020 NWSL season. She is a welcome addition to the squad and I believe she will flourish in our environment.” Burke continued, “Jenna is a full Canadian international and the type of player we’ve been looking for to fill our needs in wide areas. She is a strong player who is full of running and someone we have been tracking for a while.”
