The Washington Spirit announced today the club has signed Liverpool Ladies midfielder Amanda Da Costa. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“I am thrilled to be a part of the Washington Spirit for the upcoming 2015 NWSL season,” Da Costa said. “I paid close attention to the growth of the league while I was playing in the WSL in England for the past two years, and have been greatly impressed with Washington’s style of play.
“The Spirit has a very talented group of players and a knowledgeable staff who I am looking forward to working with,” Da Costa added. “I know that by playing here I will be able to express myself and develop myself further as a player, and I am excited to be a part of their push for a 2015 Championship.”
In 2012, Da Costa signed with Liverpool Ladies in the FA Women’s Super League (FAWSL). In her two years with the team, the 25-year-old has played a key role in Liverpool winning back-to-back championships and claiming its first appearance in the UEFA Champions League. Da Costa made over 40 appearances for the FAWSL Champions, often as an attacking midfielder.
“Amanda is a very exciting talent who is going to make us more dynamic and dangerous going forward,” Spirit general manager and coach Mark Parsons said. “She has enjoyed extraordinary success the last two years in England and we believe she will continue to achieve the same with us in D.C.”
Da Costa, a native of Katonah, New York, enjoyed an exceptional career at Florida State University as a four-year starter before being drafted by the Washington Freedom of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS). Shortly after she was drafted, WPS folded and Amanda signed with Boston Breakers in the Women’s Premier Soccer League Elite.
