Boyds, MD (September 10, 2018) – Four Washington Spirit players and a Spirit Reserves player have been named to provisional 35-player rosters for their respective national teams ahead of the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship.
The 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship, scheduled to take place October 4-17, will serve as a qualifying competition to the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France.
Spirit midfielders Rose Lavelle and Andi Sullivan, and forward Mallory Pugh have been selected for the U.S. Women’s National Team roster, while defender Rebecca Quinn will represent Canada. Additionally, Spirit Reserves midfielder Chinyelu Asher is featured on Jamaica roster.
Lavelle earned her 12th and 13th international caps over the course of the USA’s recent two-game set against Chile. She started both matches for the USA as their high-powered attack outscored World Cup-bound Chile 7-0 over the two games.
Sullivan is coming off a title run with the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team in Norway, as she captained the squad during an unbeaten three-game run in the 2018 Nordic Tournament. Sullivan, who recently completed her first NWSL season, has 10 career caps with the senior U.S. national team.
Pugh, who has racked up 37 career international caps at the age of 20, recently netted her 12th career goal and 13th assist for the senior U.S. team during their two-game sweep of Chile earlier this month.
Quinn notched her 39th career cap with Canada during the September FIFA window, helping Canada secure a hard fought 1-0 win in a defensive battle against a talented Brazil side. The 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalist appeared in 17 games during her recently completed rookie NWSL season with the Spirit.
Asher, 25, scored a goal for Jamaica in her only appearance during the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, which were held in Barranquilla, Colombia from July 19-30. The Purdue University alum finished tied for second on the Spirit Reserves in assists with two in 2018, as the squad went unbeaten in the WPSL regular season for a third straight year.
The 2018 edition of the Concacaf Women’s Championship will be disputed in two rounds. After round-robin play in Cary, NC and Edinburg, TX, the two group winners, plus the two second-place finishers will advance to the knockout round. The semifinals, third place match and final will take place at the Toyota Stadium, in Frisco, TX.
