Washington, D.C., (12/17/21) – The Washington Spirit have signed former University of Michigan defender Alia Martin to a one-year contract with a club option for 2023, the club announced today.
As a graduate student in her fifth season at Michigan in 2021, Martin was named to her third consecutive First Team All-Big Ten squad and her first First Team All-American honors. Martin made 20 starts in 2021, 18 of which included her playing the full match. Martin also recorded two assists in her 1,797 minutes on the field.
Spirit Interim Head Coach Kris Ward on the addition: “We are very excited that Alia is joining the Spirit. She is a First Team All-American coming out of Michigan and we anticipate she will be a core part of our defense in 2022. We look forward to being a part of her continued development as a player.”
Originally from Carmel, Indiana, Martin won Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year awards in her junior and senior seasons at Brebeuf Jesuit High School. Martin has also competed with the Eclipse Select and Indiana Fire clubs at the youth level and attended various U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team camps in high school.
