Boyds, Md., (8/16/20) – The Washington Spirit have acquired OL Reign’s natural 2022 first-round draft pick and $100,000 in allocation money in exchange for midfielder Rose Lavelle. Additional allocation money is also conditioned upon Lavelle’s future NWSL playing status.

Per the 2020 NWSL Compensation Guidelines, allocation money enables teams to invest funds in current or future players in excess of the current season’s team salary cap. It also would allow for a team to offer a player a salary in excess of the league’s maximum salary.

Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke had this to say on the trade: “Rose truly is a world-class player, and working with her has been an incredibly enjoyable experience. I can’t thank her enough for her work on behalf of our club and for the relationship we shared during our time together. I wish her the very best of luck and the good fortune to stay healthy as she moves into this next phase of her career.”

Spirit CEO Larry Best said this on the trade, “We wish Rose all the best and thank her for her service, time and professionalism in representing the Spirit organization over the last few years.”

Since joining the Spirit in January of 2018 after the NWSL Dispersal Draft, Lavelle has made 17 regular-season appearances for the Spirit, as well as four appearances in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup.

The midfielder has logged a total of 874 regular-season minutes and 208 played minutes in the Challenge Cup. As a member of the Spirit, Lavelle has scored two goals and earned one assist. The Cincinnati-native was also named to the 2019 NWSL Best XI and 2020 Challenge Cup Best XI.
