Boyds, Md., (3/15/20) – Washington Spirit defender Sam Staab and goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe were in action this weekend in the Australian W-League Semi-Finals. Bledsoe and Sydney FC took on the Melbourne Victory, while Staab and Western Sydney took on league-winners Melbourne City.

Bledsoe and Sydney FC traveled to Melbourne to take on the Victory in the first game of the weekend. Bledsoe started in goal and made three saves en route to her eighth shutout of the season, including this great reaction save in the 11th minute.

That save proved to be key for Sydney FC, as just three minutes later, Veronica Latsko (of the Houston Dash) scored the lone goal of the game for the visitors in the 14th minute. With the 1-0 win, Sydney FC booked their ticket to the W-League final for the third year in a row.

The second game of the weekend did not go as well for Staab and Western Sydney. The fourth-seeded Wanderers traveled to Melbourne to take on league-topping Melbourne City. The invincible City side came into this game with all the momentum after beating Western Sydney just two rounds prior by a score of 4-0. Staab got the start on the backline and played all 90 minutes in Western Sydney’s first-ever playoff appearance.

Bledsoe and Sydney FC will head back to Melbourne to take on Melbourne City in the Grand Final. The 2020 Grand Final scheduled for this weekend will take place but will be played behind closed doors and with no fans permitted to attend.
