LEESBURG, Va (March 25, 2017) – The Washington Spirit defeated the University of North Carolina 5-0 in front of a 2,000 fan sellout at the Evergreen SportsPlex in Leesburg, Virginia. All of the Spirit’s goals came from different players, showing the versatility of the Spirit’s attack.
The first goal came in the 35th minute when UNC goalkeeper Samantha Leshnak came off her line to clear a ball, but she only cleared it as far as Line Sigvardsen Jensen in the midfield. After seeing Leshnak way off her line, Sigvardsen Jensen chipped the ball from 40 yards out into the back of the net.
After coming out of halftime still 1-0, the Spirit started pouring on the goals. In the 49th minute, Katie Stengel took a corner kick that ended up near the hands of Leshnak. The ball went in the goal for the team’s second goal of the match.
Forward Cheyna Williams scored the third goal of the match in the 52nd minute after dribbling down the right side of the field and slotting it through to the far post.
In the 81st minute, Lindsay Agnew was taken down just outside of the box by Emily Fox, which set up a dangerous free kick for the Spirit. Last week’s double goal scorer Kristie Mewis stepped up to take the shot and drove it straight to the goal for her third goal of preseason.
Mewis made another key play in the 89th minute to get the ball to Agnew. The rookie forward deftly moved the ball around Leshnak to give herself an open net target and scored her first goal in a Spirit jersey.
The Spirit’s next preseason match will be on Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. against Duke University at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The Spirit’s first regular season match is a Championship rematch against North Carolina Courage on Saturday, April 15 at 3 p.m., also at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
