BOYDS, Md (Apr. 16, 2016) – The Washington Spirit has signed two draft picks from the 2016 NWSL College Draft – forwards Cheyna Williams and Cali Farquharson. Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Spirit drafted Williams from Florida State University with the 7th overall pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft. She started for the Spirit in the two preseason wins against University of Virginia and Penn State University.
“Cheyna had a very good preseason,” said Spirit general manager and head coach Jim Gabarra. “As the season progresses, we believe that she will contribute to the Spirit and have an impact. We look forward to her development.”
Williams started every game for the Noles in 2015 as they reached their 5th consecutive College Cup. She led the team with 10 goals on the season. In 2014, Cheyna played in all 26 games and made 24 starts helping Florida State win its first NCAA National Championship in program history.
The Spirit drafted Arizona State University’s Farquharson with the 12th overall pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft.
“Cali has shown all that we expected of her so far,” said Gabarra. “We believe she will continue to improve rapidly as she gains more time as a pro. She gives us another dangerous attacking option.”
Farquharson finished her career at Arizona State University as the second all-time leading scorer for the Sun Devils with 44 goals. She led her team in goals and points all four years of her ASU career. Cali earned NSCAA All-Region honors three times and All-Pac-12 honors three times.
The Washington Spirit kicks off the 2016 season today Saturday April 16th at the Maryland SoccerPlex against the Boston Breakers at 7p.m. Weather for the historic first kick of the 4th National Women’s Soccer League season is predicted to be sunny and in the 60’s.
