PORTLAND, Or. (May 9, 2015) – The Washington Spirit (2-2-1, 7 points) earned a point on the road against Portland Thorns FC (2-0-2, 8 points) on Saturday night at Providence Park. The Spirit took an early lead with a goal from forward Crystal Dunn in the third minute and another in the 14th minute from forward Francisca Ordega. Meanwhile, the Thorns worked their way back to a draw goals with from Mana Shim and Allie Long.
The Spirit got off to a quick start as Dunn picked off a pass at the top of the box in the third minute and punished the Thorns for the defensive mistake powering her shot beyond Thorns goalkeeper Nadine Angerer.

In a similar set of circumstances in the 14th minute, Spirit forward Ordega capitalized on a defensive giveaway near goal and slotted her effort into the back of the net to give the Spirit a 2-0 lead.

The Thorns got one back in the 28th minute after Mana Shim followed up on a rebound from a Sarah Jackson shot that Wys saved. Wys couldn’t react quickly enough to make the second save to deny Shim bringing the scoreline to 2-1.

Portland found an equalizer just six minutes into the second half. Shim played a well weighted ball in to midfielder Allie Long who tucked her shot just beyond the reach of Wys, but inside the far post.

Angela Salem was called for a handball in the 65th minute after a shot from outside the box careened off her shoulder. Long stepped up for the penalty kick, but Wys parried away her kick to keep the score level for the Spirit at 2-2.

Midfielder Christine Nairn nearly scored in stoppage time from a 40 yard free kick. Her looping shot bypassed every player in the box bouncing toward the Portland goal, but Angerer managed to slap the ball away from the line at the last moment.

The Spirit finally return home next weekend to play Sky Blue FC at Maureen Hendricks Field at 7 PM on May 16th.
