GERMANTOWN, Md. (Mar. 6) — The young attacking trio headed Washington Spirit training camp next week recently wrapped up a successful trip to La Manga, Spain with the U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team.
Forward Stephanie Ochs was named the Four Nations Tournament MVP, while teammates Colleen Williams and Tiffany McCarty each scored goals in the competition. The U.S. U-23s posted three wins during the two-week trip that ran from Feb. 22-March 5, defeating Norway, Sweden and England on the way to capturing the tournament crown.
Ochs, the No. 1 pick in the NWSL Supplemental Draft, scored two goals and notched three assists in Spain, playing all three games for the U.S. U-23s. She bagged the game-winning goal that sealed the tournament title in a 2-1 win over England on March 4. McCarty started and scored in a 3-1 win over Norway on February 28, and entered as a substitute against the Swedes.
Making a first ever appearance for a U.S. national team at any level, Williams came in the first two games from the bench, and did not play in the third game against England, though she got in on the scoring act with a goal in the 6-0 defeat of Sweden on March 2.
The Spirit’s fourth round draft pick of the inaugural NWSL Draft, Williams will surely look to carry her international experience into her rookie season alongside her club teammates. While this marked her first involvement in a U.S. jersey, both Ochs (last year’s U-23s) and McCarty (U-17s, U-18s and U-20s) played for various youth national teams earlier in their respective careers.
