On Friday afternoon, Washington Spirit midfielder Holly King made an appearance at a Mid Atlantic Collegiate Soccer Camp for a Q&A session with prospective college soccer players.
During the camp’s lunch break, King spoke with a group mainly composed of high school sophomores on subjects ranging from the college recruiting process, academics, level of play and the experience of being picked in the third round of the inaugural NWSL College Draft. King also gave the campers a summary of her soccer career, most of which has taken place in the D.C. area. She played for a state-champion Broad Run High School team in Ashburn, Va. before playing collegiality at Florida, and then returning home to play for D.C. United Women in 2012.
One camper asked King, “Is it hard balancing college soccer and academics at the same time?”
“It’s extremely hard,” King replied.
King made her first NWSL regular season start on Sunday afternoon in the Spirit’s 2-0 loss to FC Kansas City, playing 90 minutes in a midfield role.
Mid Atlantic Collegiate Soccer Camps are college prep and showcase camps for elite high school players. The program was created six years ago by “soccer dad” Bill Casey and local youth coach Steve Smith in order to bring a more affordable, locally-based option for summer showcase camps. Casey and Smith have turned it into one of the premier programs in the area, with the overwhelming majority of their campers going on to play college soccer. The unique factor of Mid Atlantic Soccer Camps is the intimate setting in which college coaches are able to work with the prospective players.
This summer, coaches from Virginia Tech, VCU, University of Charlotte, University of Delaware and others are helping run the girls’ camps to give instruction and also try to find potential recruits.
