Boyds, MD (October 9, 2017) – Washington Spirit fans and media have voted Estelle Johnson as the club’s 2017 Defender of the Year.
In her third season with Washington, Johnson led the back line with 66 interceptions and 49 tackles over the course of 20 games played. She led all Spirit defenders by winning 69.9 percent of duels, and finished third on the team with 74 clearances.
Along with her defensive contributions, she played a key role in the possession battle and on the attacking side, making a team-high 1159 touches on the ball while scoring the first two goals of her NWSL career. She netted her first goal on July 16 against the Houston Dash, and scored again on August 12 with a sixth minute go-ahead strike against the Boston Breakers.
Johnson made two NWSL Team of the Month appearances this season, receiving the honor in both April and June for her role in a series of dominant performances by the Spirit back line.
She played all 270 minutes in April as she racked up 188 touches and 8 tackles won over three appearances. In June, she helped the Spirit defense concede just one goal in three games, turning in an exceptional all-around effort with nine tackles, 11 clearances and nine interceptions.
