BOYDS, MD (Feb. 10, 2017) – The Washington Spirit has signed long-time Washington Spirit Reserves goalkeeper DiDi Haracic to a professional contract for the 2017 NWSL season. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“First off, I want to thank the staff for giving me another opportunity to play for my home team,” said Haracic. “I’m excited to be back with the Spirit. I’m happy to be able to say I’ll be surrounded by a great group of teammates as well as a hardworking staff. I’m looking forward to another positive season with the club.”
In 2016, Haracic played for the Colonial Conference Champion Spirit Reserves in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). The Round Hill, Virginia native was also an amateur call up for the pro team when Stephanie Labbé was called into national team duty. She previously played in the NWSL for the Western New York Flash in 2014 after earning a contract midway through the season, playing in one match, a 3-3 draw against Chicago Red Stars on August 16. In 2015, she played in Sweden for Krokom / Dvärsätts IF.
In 2013, Haracic was a member of the Washington Spirit Reserves, playing in all 12 regular season games and finishing fifth in the league with a 0.580 goals against average. From 2011-2012, she played for D.C. United Women, leading the amateur side to USL W-League Final 4.
“DiDi has persistently invested in being a contracted player in the NWSL,” said Spirit general manager and head coach Jim Gabarra. “We are pleased that we can offer her the opportunity that she has earned. DiDi has league match experience, and we are confident that she can compete for and step into a starting role.”
Haracic finished her college career at Loyola University Maryland with the school record for most career saves. In 2012, Haracic was named MAAC Player of the Year, starting all 22 games and leading the conference with six shutouts.
