Boston, Mass (June 10, 2016) – The match between the Washington Spirit (4-1-2, 14 points) and the Boston Breakers (1-6-1, 4 points) ended in a 1-1 draw in front of 4,007 fans in Boston. A low driven shot off of a rebound by Katie Stengel earned the Spirit its only goal of the game. The equalizer came for Boston just two minutes later when Breakers midfielder Louise Schillgard successfully converted a penalty kick.

In the 13th minute, the Spirit scored the first goal of the match when forward Crystal Dunn dribbled down the right flank and sent a cross into the box. Her cross was blocked, but the rebound was picked up by midfielder Joanna Lohman, who took another shot on goal. Lohman’s shot was also blocked, but the rebound was collected by forward Katie Stengel, who put the ball into the back of the next for her second goal of the season.

Two minutes later forward Cali Farquharson stumbled, taking down Brooke Elby in the penalty box, earning the Breakers a penalty kick. Schillgard converted the penalty kick bringing the Breakers level with the Spirit at 1-1.

The first yellow card of the game was awarded in the 35th minute to Breakers defender Julie King. King pulled down Spirit midfielder Christine Nairn at the midfield line, drawing a card from the referee.

In the 76th minute, the Spirit saw an opportunity to score when Argentinian midfielder Estefania Banini made a run to the endline, preventing the ball from going out, and sent a cross back in toward the top of the box. Lohman was there to take the shot, but her driven ball was blocked and cleared by King before it could reach goalkeeper Libby Stout.

Goalkeeper Kelsey Wys and forward Francisca Ordega both made their season debuts tonight. Ordega played the 21 minutes in the second half in which she showed her speed and skill in the attacking third. Wys played the full 90 minutes and made one save.

The Spirit will play the first of four consecutive home games against the Orlando Pride on June 18th at 7 p.m. at Maureen Hendricks Field.
