Boyds, MD (November 26, 2017) – Washington Spirit and Argentine international midfielder Estefanía Banini scored nine goals and assisted three more over the course of five games at the 2017 Women’s Futsal World Cup in Catalonia from Nov. 20-25, leading Argentina to a second place finish.

Argentina stormed through group play with 6-1 and 8-1 victories over host Catalonia and France, as Banini scored two goals in each game, and added an assist in the tournament opener.

Banini recorded her third consecutive brace in the quarterfinals against Switzerland, as Argentina rolled to another blowout victory, shutting out their opponent 7-0.

The semifinal round proved to be a much tougher test for Argentina, but a heroic effort from Banini vaulted them past Paraguay, 4-3. Banini again found the net net twice, and assisted both of Argentina’s other two goals in the narrow win, setting up a match-up with Brazil in the title match.

Despite a first half goal from Banini which took the sides into halftime tied at 1-1, Brazil pulled away in the second half, claiming the Asociación Mundial de Fútsal (AMF) Women’s Futsal World Cup championship.

Nonetheless, it was a phenomenal showing on the world stage for Banini and her teammates, who outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 27-9 while winning four of five matches.
