Philadelphia, PA (Jan. 17, 2014) – The Washington Spirit are excited to announce the addition of defender Crystal Dunn to its roster for the 2014 season. Dunn was selected as the first overall draft pick during the NWSL draft.
General manager and head coach, Mark Parson said, “I am very proud to welcome Crystal and her parents to the club and ecstatic that we have just picked up one of the most exciting players in the country.”
Dunn has recently been called up to the senior U.S. National Team. She has earned eight (8) caps thus far. Dunn was a key member of the Under-20 team that won the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan in 2012, where she had three assists. In 2010, Dunn won national rookie of the year honors her freshman year at UNC. Throughout her youth career Dunn, mostly played forward and midfield and began playing defense for the U.S.
“It’s just an honor. Just to get drafted is a huge accomplishment. Definitely to see my name go first, was very exciting,” said the newest addition to the Washington Spirit, Crystal Dunn. “I’m just excited to be part of such a good program. I know a lot of the girls there and I’m just super excited to get out there and play with them.”
Midfielder, Molly Menchel from the University of Virginia, was the eighth pick during the third round of the draft. Menchel appeared in 90 matches during her career at UVA and scored 13 goals of which eight were game-winners.
“Molly is already a part of the family after being a key player in our reserves and we are so pleased we had the opportunity to draft her,” said Mark Parsons of the addition to the team.
Shasta Fisher, also of UVA, was the second draft pick in the fourth round. Fisher plays as a midfielder and defender. She has started in 25 matches and scored one goal and one assist.
“I’m incredibly grateful and thankful to get the chance to play in the NWSL for the Washington Spirit and to get the opportunity of playing with a group of extremely talented players. This has been something I have dreamed of all my life,” said Fisher.
“Shasta was a key piece to UVA’s record breaking success last year and to see her still available for us to grab late was a great surprise,” said Mark Parsons of Fisher.
Washington Spirit, added striker Tiffany Weimer, in a trade with Portland Thorns for the fourth round pick.. Weimer joined the Thorns late in the 2013 season, playing in ten matches and scoring one key goal during the NWSL semifinal. Weimer has played both locally and internationally, bringing a lot of experience to the club.
“The icing on the cake was trading our last pick and welcoming Tiffany Weimer to the club,” said Parsons. “A fantastic player who will bring quality and experience to DC and make us even more dangerous in and around the goal.”
“It was a very exciting and successful draft for us and I feel we really over achieved,” said Mark Parsons. “The Washington Spirit are looking forward to a very exciting season in 2014.”
