Spirit coach, USWNT legend Briana Scurry inducted into National Soccer Hall of Fame

Boyds, MD (February 11, 2018) – Washington Spirit assistant coach and U.S. Women’s National Team legend Briana Scurry was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Saturday evening in Orlando, Fla.

Scurry was inducted in the Player category, alongside long-time referee, coach, match commissioner and television commentator Dr. Joe Machnik, who was inducted in the Builder category for the Class of 2017. Meanwhile, legendary USWNT head coach Tony DiCicco was posthumously honored with the Werner Fricker Builder Award during the U.S. Soccer Anniversary Dinner at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld.

Scurry, who played for the Washington Freedom from 2009-2010, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and one-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion goalkeeper. Her career total of 173 international appearances is the second most among female soccer goalkeepers.

The Minneapolis, Minn., native lost only two total games over the course of three FIFA Women’s World Cups and two Olympic Games. She is perhaps best known for her phenomenal performance at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup where she made several world class saves in the semifinal victory against Brazil before stopping a penalty in the WNT’s shootout victory against China in the final, leading to Brandi Chastain’s winning spot kick.

In 2016, Scurry was named an Honorary Captain for the Washington Spirit, in recognition of her contributions as a mentor for young players and as an ambassador for women’s soccer. She joined the Spirit NWSL technical staff as the First Assistant coach ahead of the 2018 season.
