Spirit Reserves forward Ashley Herndon scored early, but Washington was unable to counter Fredericksburg’s Kara Blosser’s equalizer in the 31st minute to break the deadlock.
The Washington Spirit survived an early penalty kick attempt but gave up two second-half goals in 10 minutes in the second half in a 2-0 loss to the Chicago Red Stars before 2,593 at Maureen Hendricks Field at Maryland SoccerPlex. Ashlyn Harris denied a penalty kick early before Adriana Leon and Ella Masar scored for the Red Stars.
The Washington Spirit will meet a new opponent for the last time in the inaugural NWSL season when the Chicago Red Stars make the first of two appearances at Maryland SoccerPlex on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The Washington Spirit will take to the national stage as the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) will kick off its first national television game on FOX Soccer when the Spirit visit Seattle Reign FC on Sunday, July 14 at 8:30 p.m. ET at the Moda Health Pitch at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.
