  • Kickoff times changed for three Washington Spirit home matches

    The kickoff times for three Washington Spirit 2017 NWSL regular season home matches have each been changed to 7 p.m. ET. Washington’s match-ups with Sky Blue FC (Saturday, May 6), FC Kansas City (Saturday, May 20) and Seattle Reign FC (Saturday, September 30) will now take place in primetime at Maureen Hendricks Field.

    The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) unveiled today the 2017 broadcast schedule on Lifetime including a milestone package of 22 regular-season matches, both playoff semifinal games and the NWSL Championship game. The Washington Spirit wil be featured three times in the NWSL Game of the Week on Lifetime this season.

    Saturday’s preseason match at Evergreen Sportsplex in Leesburg, VA was not only a historic first appearance for the Washington Spirit in the Commonwealth of Virginia, but it was also a homecoming of sorts for Spirit players DiDi Haracic and Whitney Church, who both grew up playing soccer in Loudoun County.

    The Washington Spirit has announced the club’s 2017 NWSL preseason roster, consisting of 32 new and returning players. The 2016 NWSL Championship finalists will bring four goalkeepers, eight defenders, 11 midfielders and 9 forwards into preseason training camp, featuring a mix of youth and veteran talent.

  • Washington Spirit selects Tom Torres as U.S. Soccer Development Academy Director in Virginia

    The Washington Spirit has hired veteran D.C. United Academy coach Tom Torres to head up the club’s U.S. Soccer Girls Development Academy in Virginia. Torres, who has played and coached in the D.C. area for most of his life, joins the Spirit after a 10-year run with D.C. United Academy, where he was a driving force behind the growth of United’s U12-U15 Pre-Academy, as well as the club’s scouting and affiliate programs.

  • NWSL Announces Washington Spirit 2017 Regular Season Schedule

    The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced today the schedule for the 2017 NWSL season, including the Spirit’s twelve home games at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The Spirit will host and visit every team in the league at least once, play six teams three times overall, but will only face Seattle Reign FC, Chicago Red Stars, and FC Kansas City twice.

  • Arielle Ship Named to U.S. U-23 Roster for Three Matches in Spain

    U.S. Soccer has announced forward Arielle Ship as a member of the 22-player roster for the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team trip to La Manga, Spain from February 25 to March 7. The team will play three matches against their U-23 counterparts from Japan (March 2), England (March 4), and Norway (March 7).

    The Canada Soccer Association announced Washington Spirit players Shelina Zadorsky, Stephanie Labbé, and 2017 draftee Lindsay Agnew as part of the 22 player roster for the Algarve Cup which will take place in Portugal from March 1-8.

  • Arielle Ship’s Next Port of Call is Washington D.C.

    Arielle Ship did not have the usual path to finding her rookie team. After Seattle Reign FC selected her with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft, she was traded to the Spirit just 11 days later. Her plans may have taken a detour to the other Washington, but now the former Cal Berkeley star is focused on where she can fit in with last year’s NWSL Championship finalists.

    The Washington Spirit has added Baltimore Armour as a U.S. Soccer Girls’ Development Academy partner for the state of Maryland, which will now be called “Washington Spirit Baltimore Armour.” This partnership adds to the relationship already in place with Montgomery Soccer Incorporated (MSI), creating a direct “path to the pros” for over 11,000 female players in one of the nation’s top soccer player development markets.
