Los Angeles, Calif. (09/20/2022) – The Washington Spirit will go for its third consecutive win as it takes on Angel City FC on Wednesday night in the first leg of a two-match road trip.

In its first-ever trip to Los Angeles, the Spirit will look to level its young series with Angel City FC. The expansion side took the inaugural match between the clubs in mid-May at Audi Field by a 1-0 margin thanks to a Christen Press strike late in the first half. With Washington now eliminated from playoff contention despite its two consecutive victories, it still has the opportunity to play spoiler in its final three matches. Angel City finds itself on the outside looking in as it sits four points behind the playoff line and in need of three points Wednesday night. With Angel City forward Press out for the season and defending third mainstay Vanessa Gilles recently loaned out to Olympique Lyonnais, the Spirit will need to take advantage of its opportunities against the opposition’s new starters.

Though it ranks near the bottom of the table in goals scored in 2022, Angel City’s defense is on par with the rest of the west coast as it has only allowed 21 goals in 19 contests this regular season, tying the side for third-best in the NWSL. Washington’s red-hot attacking third has put up six goals in its past two contests, including four against the league’s then-top defense in San Diego Wave FC. If Washington can keep up its impressive offensive output, look for an exciting battle in the Angel City defensive zone on Wednesday night.

The match will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network for fans in the United States and on Twitch for international viewers. Following the match, the Spirit will host a press conference with interim head coach Albertin Montoya and two players. Fans can stream the postgame presser via the Washington Spirit Twitch channel.
