Hailing from Barrie, Ontario, Devon Kerr is currently one of just three international players on the Spirit roster. After graduating from Bill Crothers Secondary School outside Toronto, Devon came to the United States to play college soccer at the Ohio State University. Over four seasons with the Buckeyes, Devon played in 63 matches and tallied 206 saves and 19 clean sheets while maintaining a 0.823 goals against average. In her senior season, Devon earned First Team All-Big Ten honors and was named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year. Devon joined the Spirit in March 2020, making her club debut in the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup and earning her first regular season cap on July 3, 2022 in the Spirit’s first-ever match against San Diego. We sat down with our favorite Canadian shot-stopper to ask her a few off-the-pitch questions.
How old were you when you started playing soccer?
I was about four years old when I started playing in the Little Timbits league in Canada.
Who was your favorite player growing up?
My favorite player was definitely either Karina LeBlanc from a goalkeeper’s perspective with Canada or Briana Scurry.
Do you have a nickname?
People call me Dev but when I played basketball growing up, people called me Taz because I was really fast down the court.
What’s your dream car?
One of the old school G-Wagons in matte black.
Is there a reason behind your jersey number?
Originally I started wearing #18 because #1 was taken, that’s what I was all of college and then I ended up really resonating with 18 and liking the way it looked on my jersey. It’s actually funny because my boyfriend (Ryan Feltner) plays for the Colorado Rockies and we both wear #18 now so that’s part of why I’d like to keep it.
What TV shows are you watching right now?
I’m just finishing up the last two episodes of Stranger Things which I love and then I’m watching Peaky Blinders.
What movie can you quote from start to finish?
Mean Girls or Bridesmaids.
What’s your least favorite food?
Mashed potatoes, hands-down and it’s so funny because that’s a really unpopular opinion but I hate the texture of them.
Who inspires you?
I would say my parents just with their work ethic and how much they sacrificed to help me get where I wanted to with my goals. They really instilled a good work ethic and determination in me.
What is your favorite emoji?
I like the one that has the one eye winking and then the tongue sticking out 😜. Either that or the white heart 🤍.
What would you sing at karaoke night?
Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey.
Money is no object, you can live anywhere in the world, where will you be?
Well honestly, after being in San Diego this past weekend, I am a new-found lover of California, anywhere near the water. It used to be Florida but the humidity is too much so now I’m really obsessed with the California weather.
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I’m an early bird and I think that came with having a dog.
What was your favorite subject in school/your major in college?
Probably English in high school and then my college major was sport industry and communication but I had a minor in interior design as well and that was what I was most interested in.
What is your favorite season?
Winter, Christmas, I love it. Everybody else hates it but I love going home to Canada for Christmas break and being in the snow and having a white Christmas. That whole time of the year is just super cozy.
What was your mindset heading into your first set of regular season caps during the international window?
I was definitely excited. It’s been a long time coming so I feel like I’ve had a ton of time to prepare both mentally and physically. I felt good, I felt calm and ready. Being behind a new team in a sense with our new lineup was exciting as well.
What are your personal and team goals for the rest of the 2022 season?
My personal goals are just to continue working on the little things and get better at applying them in the game positively. For our team goals, I want us to keep applying our core principles as a team to the point where we have it down to a science. I want us to dominate those areas of the game. Obviously winning is our main goal but I think it’s important for us to achieve those smaller goals before we start looking bigger.
