Leesburg, VA. (03/25/2022) – The Washington Spirit finished regulation time deadlocked with NJ/NY Gotham FC in the club’s first home match since last season’s quarterfinal against North Carolina. After falling behind early, the Spirit used a barrage of scoring chances in the second half to earn a point in the 2022 Challenge Cup standings.

In just the 23rd minute of action, Gotham star Kristie Mewis drew a foul in the box and easily converted the ensuing penalty kick to put her squad on top early. The opening goal represented a first half that was without much offensive action as the Spirit were unable to connect on two scoring chances from Tara McKeown and Trinity Rodman in the opening 45.

Washington maintained a steady scoring attack from the 57th minute on, starting with an Ashley Sanchez header that went just wide of the net and a phenomenal offensive move to beat her defender and set up a direct shot from the shallow right side in the 58th minute. The Spirit finally broke through in the 61st minute when Ashley Hatch buried a feed from Ashley Sanchez in the bottom right corner.

Ten minutes later, another offensive attack almost netted the Spirit the lead as Ashley Hatch and Tara McKeown sent shots just wide on crosses from Trinity Rodman in the 72nd minute and Kelley O’Hara in the 74th minute, respectively. Gotham goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris stopped another streaking shot from Hatch in the 75th minute to end the Spirit attack.

After full time was called in front of the Segra Field crowd of 3,400, both Washington and NJ/NY earned a point in this year’s early season tournament standings. The Spirit will be back in action next Wednesday, March 30 as they take on the North Carolina Courage at Audi Field at 7:30 p.m. EST.
