Washington, D.C. (03/24/22) – The Washington Spirit will take on NJ/NY Gotham FC on Friday night for the second game of the Challenge Cup at 7:30 p.m. at Segra Field. The match will be broadcast on Paramount+ for fans in the United States and on Twitch for international viewers. Washington is coming off a 0-0 draw in Orlando while Gotham fell to North Carolina 2-0.

The Opposition

NJ/NY Gotham FC came into the year with a new look to their roster after bringing in Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris, and Kristie Mewis and sending Kailen Sheridan and DiDi Haracic to expansion teams. They struggled in the first match of the season away at North Carolina in which they were shutout, but are expected to get reinforcements with players coming off the injury report.

Keep an eye on the front line of the visiting team as they have one of the most talented forward lines with the likes of Margaret Purce and Ifeoma Onumonu. The Spirit backline will be forced to contain those two and make goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury’s work lighter in the defensive third.

The midfield will also be key to this game as Gotham’s trio of Jennifer Cudjoe, McCall Zerboni, and Kristie Mewis will present an interesting matchup for the Spirit’s trio.

The Spirit

Coming off a road trip to Orlando that saw the Spirit split the points with the Pride, expect the Spirit to be hungry for a better result against Gotham. Against Orlando, the Spirit were sound defensively, but in the offensive third faced a strong opponent in Erin McLeod in goal for the Pride.

The surface at Segra could play a big role in this game. As it is the first of three games in 10 days for the Spirit and on turf, keep an eye on the minutes for everyone on the pitch.

The last time these two teams met at Segra there were five goals scored and a red card handed out in the 7’. While both teams will probably hope for a better defensive performance from their squads, expect the back and forth nature of the game to continue.
