Washington, D.C., (06/06/2021) – The Washington Spirit tied the Pride 1-1 in their fifth match of the 2021 NWSL regular season on Sunday afternoon at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

After two minutes, Spirit forward Trinity Rodman turned her defender and drove the end line. The second overall pick in the 2021 draft sneaked a diagonal cross behind Orlando’s backline, but forward Ashley Hatch scuffed her shot wide. The Pride countered with Taylor Kornieck, who bodied Sam Staab off the ball and crossed a lazy pass that Emily Sonnett intercepted.

In the 7’, Rodman once again created for her team; the 19-year-old found Ashley Sanchez on the wing. Sanchez did a dipsy-do to free herself and curved a pass into the box. The clearance dropped to midfielder Julia Roddar at the top of the 18, and the Swede rocked a shot that caromed off the crossbar.

Later in the first half, defender Kelley O’Hara found herself in acres of space on the left wing on a quick Washington counter and nearly picked out Hatch inside the 18, but the cross floated a foot over the Spirit’s dynamic striker.

Without the services of Sydney Leroux, Orlando forward Alex Morgan stripped the ball from Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan and won herself a look on goal, but the shot went directly at Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe in net.

At the 25-minute mark, Sanchez dinked a set piece to the head of Sonnett, and the US international would have scored had it not been for a diving save from goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris.

In the 39’, Sanchez made a driving run down the right wing. The speedy forward glided past three Orlando defenders, but the ensuing attempt failed to trouble Harris. On the stroke of halftime, O’Hara nutmegged Ali Riley on the end line and almost picked out Rodman at the far post.

After colliding with Marta in the early stages of the second half, O’Hara got the ball on the left flank, cut in and took it herself. The result: an outstretched Harris arm and a shot that just cleared the crossbar.

In the 64’, Staab found O’Hara on the left side. Washington’s left back hit a teasing cross that drew Harris off her line, and Hatch — bravely — headed the ball into the back of the net.

The Spirit’s lead lasted less than four minutes; Kornieck pounced on an errant pass and placed a right-footed shot into the bottom left-hand corner, freezing Bledsoe on the line.

With eight minutes to go, Hatch stole the ball in Orlando’s third and found substitute Dorian Bailey, who smashed a 26-yard shot that forced a full-stretch save from Harris.

Neither team broke the deadlock in the seven additional minutes; the clubs finished the game with one goal and one point apiece.

The Spirit get a week off before traveling out to SeatGeek Stadium to face the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, June 19 at 8:00 pm ET. The match will be broadcast live on Paramount+ (USA) and Twitch (INT).
