Boyds, Md., (12/11/20) – The Washington Spirit have re-signed forward Averie Collins to a new two-year contract. Collins is the 10th player to re-sign with the Spirit this offseason and brings the total of players under contract for 2021 to 15 players.
Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke had this to say about the contract extension: “I am really happy to return Averie to the Spirit for the 2021 season. I firmly believe that she will make a significant impact in her second season in this league. She has proven to be a specialist striker that gives us an entirely different look up front. After an expected period of adjustment coming into the professional game, which is typical for most rookies, Averie gained valuable experience last season. We want to help her push on with her career at the Spirit. She’s a great character to have around the club and I can’t wait to start working with her again in 2021.”
Collins was selected 17th overall by the Spirit in the 2020 NWSL College Draft. During her first year, Collins played in five matches, started one and saw a total of 84 minutes of playing time between the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup and Fall Series.
Prior to joining the Spirit, Collins played for Stanford and Washington State University. At Stanford, Collins was a member of three-straight Pac-12 championships. As a member of the Card, she made 57 appearances and recorded 10 goals and five assists. In addition to the three Pac-12 championships, she also won a National Championship in 2017. As a sophomore, she was named a Pac-12 All-American honorable mention. As a graduate student at Washington State, Collins started in all 24 games, scoring six goals and adding five assists. She helped the Cougars to the 2019 Final Four for the first time in program history.
Spirit CEO and Director of Sporting Operations Larry Best had this to say about the re-signing: “With Averie returning for her second year as a professional player, we’re excited to see her continue her upward development track from year one. Averie has the ability to be a game changer as a target forward and we see her as being up for the demands of the physically challenging NWSL.”
