Boyds, MD., (10/20/20) – The Washington Spirit finished the 2020 NWSL Fall Series in third place, earning a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Community Shield for their community partner, DC Scores.

In addition, the Spirit announced they will match the Verizon Community Shield $10,000 donation, distributing it equally among the team’s other community partners – the Youth Leadership Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s National Hospital, Comfort Cases, Kids Enjoy Exercise Now Greater DC-Baltimore, and Teens Run DC.

“I want to thank our players and staff for their performance during the NWSL Fall Series that resulted in us earning a donation for DC Scores, said Spirit Owner Steve Baldwin. “I’m delighted to match the league total and distribute it to our remaining community partners. One of the most important things about our community work is that it represents every kid in our community. When a kid looks at our club and what we do, I want them to see themselves in our work. I want them to know that our club loves them, welcomes them and supports them. I thank all of our community partners for their partnership with our club.”

The Spirit finished first in the Northeast Pod over the Chicago Red Stars and Sky Blue FC, and earned a third-place finish in the Fall Series standings behind the Portland Thorns and Houston Dash. The Thorns received a $25,000 prize for winning first place and the Dash a $15,000 prize for coming in second.

“We are proud of our partnership with DC Scores. They are an amazing organization doing great things for young people in D.C.,” said Spirit defender Paige Nielsen. “We are thrilled that we were able to support them with our play during the Fall Series. We look forward to the work we will continue to do together that will have a positive impact on our community.”
