Boyds, Md., (1/17/20) – Washington Spirit midfielders Rose Lavelle and Andi Sullivan have been named to the United States Women’s National Team’s 2020 Olympic Qualifying Roster. Lavelle and Sullivan both joined the USWNT for a January training camp that ended on January 15.

Lavelle and Sullivan will represent the US at the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament being held from January 28 to February 9 in Texas and California. The US will attempt to qualify for a seventh consecutive Olympic Games and win the Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying event for the fifth consecutive time.

Lavelle, who was nominated for the 2019 US Soccer Player of the Year award last November, became a household name with the USWNT in 2019 after her bronze-ball winning performance in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Lavelle has made 38 appearances for the USWNT and has scored 10 times.

Sullivan has broken into the USWNT roster after the World Cup last summer, as she has been called into every USWNT camp since then. The Spirit captain has made 15 career appearances for the USWNT, earning two assists.

USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovksi said this on the roster decisions: “Full credit to the players for competing hard during our January camp and for making our final roster decisions difficult.”

Andonovski continued: “This is a team that understands that you have to be aggressive and unpredictable in how you create scoring chances but also knows how to be smart on defense at the same time. They are mature and savvy players who can adjust on the fly if needed and of course, are highly motivated to earn that berth to the Olympics.

The US will open the tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 28 against Haiti. The US will then face Panama on Friday, Jan. 31 before finishing Group A play against Costa Rica on Monday, Feb. 3. All the U.S. group matches will kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT. The tournament’s top two finishers will secure their place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
