Boyds, Md., (11/01/2019) – The Washington Spirit organization had big expectations for Jordan DiBiasi when they selected her with the 3rd pick in the 2019 NWSL. It’s safe to say she surpassed those expectations after becoming a regular starter and earning a 2019 Rookie of the Year nomination.
As a Stanford captain, a member of the United States Under-23 team Women’s National Team, and a member of the 2018 All-America First Team, the Spirit front office believed DiBiasi could assume a pivotal role from the start of the season.
“Jordan DiBiasi is brilliant,” Washington Spirit head coach Richie Burke said on draft night. “I think every [player] will come into the training ground from minute one and be competitive. They’ll be knocking on the door for a starting role and making an impact in this league.”
The 22-year-old midfielder did just that as she accumulated 1,747 minutes, played in 22 games and made 20 starts. DiBiasi missed only two games (due to injury) during her rookie season with the Spirit. The midfielder contributed to Washington’s success early in the season, scoring twice during the Spirit’s first five games.
DiBiasi didn’t miss a minute of play through the Spirit’s first five matches, and she quickly established herself as an offensive threat, scoring goals in back-to-back matches on May 4 and May 11. Her fiery start continued throughout the season as she recorded 4 goals, and also orchestrated the Spirit’s setpieces, as she led the team with 48 corner kicks.
In addition to her contributions to the Spirit, as a member of the USWNT U-23 team, DiBiasi led her squad to repeat as the Nordic Tournament Champions, scoring a team-leading two goals during the three-game tournament.
Additionally, DiBiasi was nominated for 2019 NWSL Rookie of the Year. Winners will be announced in the days leading up to and after the NWSL Championship game on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPN at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC.
