Boyds, Md., (9/21/2019) – The Washington Spirit made a late push that included a goal from forward Mallory Pugh, but still fell 3-1 to the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.

Behind two goals and an assist from Australian national team star Sam Kerr, the Red Stars raced out to a 3-0 lead and a third straight victory.

It took until the 80th minute for the Spirit to get on the scoresheet, but that wasn’t for a lack of opportunities. Washington finished the night with a 7-4 advantage in shots on target, but Chicago and USWNT goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made six saves to keep the Spirit attack in check.

Pugh’s goal was set up by a perfectly placed through ball from defender Sam Staab, one of the brightest rookie stars in the NWSL this season. Pugh took one simple touch around Naeher before slotting home.

The Spirit will remain on the road for a matchup at the Houston Dash on Wednesday. The game will be Washington’s first as a part of the NWSL’s new broadcast deal with ESPN. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
