Boyds, Md., (9/3/2019) – The United States Under-23 Women’s National Team repeated as 2019 Nordic Tournament Champions after overcoming the competition in Loughborough, England. Washington Spirit rookies Jordan DiBiasi and Sam Staab both started every game for the U.S. as they defended their championship.
DiBiasi showcased her attacking ability as she was the leading scorer for the U.S with two goals throughout the three-game tournament. Staab played a large part in the U.S. defense that earned two clean sheets and conceded a tournament-best 1 goal.
DiBiasi earned her first Nordic Tournament win while Staab collected her second, as the defender also started in all three games of the 2018 Nordic tournament.
The team opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Norway on Aug. 28, handing Norway their first loss in over a year. DiBiasi scored the first goal in the 20th minute, and Simone Charley netted a game-sealing goal in the 86th minute.
The U.S. U23s continued their run with a 1-0 win over England on Aug. 30. Sky Blue FC forward Imani Dorsey, scored the lone goal that gave the U.S. the lead over England.
The U.S. squad concluded their repeat campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sweden, finalizing their tournament win on Sept. 2.
Sweden scored the lone goal of the 2019 Nordic Tournament against the U.S. in the 27th minute, thanks to a strike from Tove Almqvist. DiBiasi evened the score after beating the opposing keeper in the 61st minute with a penalty kick.
The U.S. topped the tournament with seven points while Sweden placed second with four. England and Norway tied for third as both nations earned three points.
The Spirit will be back on the pitch Sept. 14 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. as they take on Reign FC, kickoff is set at 7:30 p.m. ET. [TICKETS]
