Boyds, Md. (8/20/19) – The Washington Spirit will host the fourth-seeded Utah Royals for the final game of the series this season. The Spirit will look to get their first win since July 24 as they fight for playoff contention.

The Spirit won their last meeting with the Royals 2-0, however, Utah was without many of their defenders as they were called up for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The June 1 win was also the Spirit’s first win against the Royals in club history.

The Opposition

The Royals have won their last three games by a margin of 8 goals scored to 1 conceded. The Royal defense is also leading the league in goals conceded, having only allowed 15 goals.

Utah has a strong attack thanks to their dynamic duo of forwards in Christen Press and Amy Rodriguez. In only seven appearances for the Royals, Press has accounted for six goals and one assist. Rodriguez leads the Royals with eight goals this season for the club.

The Royals also boast a talented goalkeeper in Nicole Barnhart, who has a league-leading eight clean sheets this season.

The Spirit

Washington has struggled to find the back of the net recently as they have only produced two goals in their last four games.

The team is currently in seventh place with 21 points. The Spirit have a tough road to climb back into playoff contention as three of their last four games are against Chicago, North Carolina, and Portland.

A win over the Royals is crucial for the Spirit as they are six points behind Utah, with seven games remaining in the regular season.

Kickoff is set for Wednesday, August 21, 7:30pm at the Maryland SoccerPlex. For those who cannot make it to the SoccerPlex, the game will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Washington and the Monumental Sports Network.
