Boyds, Md., (8/10/2019) – A sellout crowd of 5,300 fans filled Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Saturday night as the Washington Spirit fell 1-0 to the Chicago Red Stars.

Supporters flooded Spirit Hill and both sets of bleachers and even overflowed into the hillside on the northern edge of the stadium as Washington’s strong defensive effort kept the match close to the very end. Yuki Nagasato’s 65th minute goal was the difference as Chicago won its fifth consecutive game.

Spirit defender Sam Staab and goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe each did their part to keep the score level in the first half. With Chicago forward Arin Wright through on goal in the sixth minute, Staab came sliding in to deny what could have been an early Red Stars lead.

Twenty minutes later, Bledsoe came up big as Wright was foiled from close range yet again. Wright received a cross from forward Sam Kerr, but her shot couldn’t get past Bledsoe, who kicked the ball to safety.

There was no shortage of star power up and down the field on Saturday. Four 2019 Women’s World Cup players featured in the starting lineup for the Spirit, including midfielder Rose Lavelle, who made her first in-game appearance at the SoccerPlex this season.

Chicago’s lineup featured U.S. World Cup players Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher and Tierna Davidson, as well as Australian standout Kerr.

Following the match, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and Montgomery County Councilmember Craig Rice presented the Spirit with a proclamation of support for the team’s talents on the field and its ability to inspire young soccer players all across the county.

The Spirit will go west next weekend for a match against Portland Thorns FC in Portland, Oregon. Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. ET next Saturday, and the action can be seen on NBC Sports Washington and Monumental Sports Network.
