Piscataway, NJ., (7/24/2019) – The Washington Spirit completed a season sweep of Sky Blue FC, winning 1-0 in Piscataway, New Jersey in front of the 2nd largest crowd in Sky Blue history.
The Spirit had a full roster of World Cup players for only the second time this season with the return of World Cup bronze ball winner award Rose Lavelle to the lineup.
From the opening kickoff Washington completely dominated the match. The Spirit led in shots 17-4, held possession for 63.7% of the game, and completed 82% of passes opposed to Sky Blue’s 67%. They had several chances to score early, the best of which saw Tori Huster find Mallory Pugh wide open on the left wing. Pugh was able to shake her defender but pushed her shot wide of the goal.

Despite 12 shots in the first half the Spirit were forced to wait until the second frame to score.
The winning goal of the match came from forward Ashley Hatch. Hatch got behind Sky Blue’s back line on a break away and was able to chase down a picture perfect pass from the midfield. Once Hatch secured the ball she was able to shoot it in from the center of the box to the bottom right corner of the net.

The goal ties Hatch with forward Jordan DiBiasi for the most on the season with four.
The win puts the Spirit firmly back in the playoff picture one point ahead of the Chicago Red Stars in third place and only one point behind the North Carolina Courage for second.
The Spirit have nine days off before returning to the pitch August 2nd against the Chicago Red Stars.
