2019 Draftees at the Heart of Spirit Rebound

Boyds, Md., (7/11/2019)– The Washington Spirit draft class of 2019 has been the most productive class draft class in the NWSL.

Building this impressive draft class came through a league-high seven trades to acquire talent before and during the 2019 draft. A large part of this season’s resurgence has come either directly from the draft picks made or from the trades surrounding this draft. Following Spirit players were acquired from trades involving the 2019 NWSL College Draft.

So far the Spirit’s draft picks have been the most productive in the league by a wide margin. The chart below shows the minutes played by players from the 2019 draft for every team in the NWSL.

Spirit draft picks have played 3038 minutes, more than double the 1449 minutes than second place Sky Blue FC. The Spirit’s young talents have also proven their scoring tact this season. As the chart below shows, Spirit draft picks account for six of the eight total goals scored by the 2019 NWSL College Draft class. That’s 75 percent of the goals scored by the 2019 class.

Jordan Dibiasi (3rd overall draft pick) leads all picks in goals with three. She alone has outscored all draft picks from other clubs combined. In addition to the Spirit’s goal-scoring prowess, Bayley Feist is one of only three 2019 draft picks in the NWSL with an assist to her name.

This draft class already has a legitimate claim to being one of the Spirit’s best ever. The six goals scored is already double the Spirit’s previous record of three, set in 2016. The 2019 class also has had two players, Sam Staab and Jordan DiBiasi, named to the NWSL Team of the Month in May and June only three months into their first season.
