Boyds, Md., (6/10/2019)Spirit Forward Cheyna Matthews is in France as part of the first Caribbean squad to ever play in the Women’s World Cup. The Spirit sat down with Matthews while she held her son Josiah to talk about her being part of this historic team.

Matthews talks about the emotions she had while watching the Reggae Girlz qualify for the World Cup while at home pregnant with Josiah “I remember watching the game and talking to my mom, we were like screaming on the phone because we were so excited that they qualified, because I knew at that point there would be more camps and more opportunities.” Matthews also discusses the long climb back to playing shape after giving birth “Oh it was the biggest push of all time; not only do I have to get back in form for the club, but to play on the highest stage.”

Later in the conversation, Matthews mentions her Jamaican roots as a big reason why she is so excited to wear the crest and colors “My grandmother is there, my grandfather who has passed on now… I wish he were here to be a part of this as well.” She caps off her interview with how excited she is to play against the best players in the world in France “playing against Brazil and Australia, quality opponents in the group stage, it’s exciting.” Matthews and the Reggae Girlz kicked off World Cup play on Sunday against Brazil and will face Italy on Friday at 3:00pm ET.
