Boyds, MD (6//19) – Washington Spirit forward Cheyna Matthews made her FIFA World Cup debut as the Reggae Girlz fell to Brazil 3-0 in their first ever FIFA World Cup match.

Matthews started the game at winger in Jamaica’s 3-3-4 formation as she did in their last friendly against Scotland earlier in the month. She logged one shot attempt (blocked) and used her speed to create two chances for the Reggae Girlz early in the first half.

Jamaican keeper Sydney Schneider kept the game close despite Brazil keeping control of the possession. Schneider made excellent plays in the first including saving an early penalty kick. Brazilian forward Cristiane would eventually go on to notch a hat trick in the game securing all 3 points.

The Reggae Girlz put out a respectable effort in their first ever World Cup match despite the scoreline. They had several strong chances early on that if they capitalized on the game could have been different.

Matthews and the Reggae Girlz they have plenty of time to rest until there next match against Italy on June 14. The game will be broadcast on FOX at noon ET.
