Boyds, Md. (5/25/19) – The Washington Spirit will travel to Bridgeview, Illinois for an important early season matchup with the Chicago Red Stars at SeatGeek Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. ET
After defeating Portland Thorns FC last week 3-1, the Spirit have not lost a game in over a month and look to keep up their solid form as they face the number one team on the NWSL table in Chicago.
Meanwhile, the Red Stars have won three of their last four games after starting the season off with two ties. Chicago currently sits atop the NWSL ladder with 11 points, one more than the Spirit who are currently in a three-way tie for 2nd place with 10 points.
This match represents a huge chance for the Spirit to jump in the league standings. With a win the Spirit would be at the very least tied for first place, the right set of results across the league would have the Spirit standing alone in first.
Chicago is known for their high scoring offense, as the Red Stars are currently tied for the most goals scored in the league. However, they will be missing the NWSL top goal-scorer with Australian star Sam Kerr heading to France for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Kerr added two more goals to her tally in her final game as the Red Stars topped the Houston Dash 2-1 last weekend. Kerr leaving the club means that Chicago will defer to Yūki Nagasato who currently leads the league in assists and is 3rd on the goals list with three.
In addition to Kerr leaving, the Red Stars are already missing keeper Alyssa Naeher, defender Tierna Davidson, and midfielders Julie Ertz and Morgan Brian, all of whom have joined the United States Women’s National Team.
The Spirit will also be missing a couple of players from the Australian National Team in midfielder Chloe Logarzo and defender Amy Harrison. This will also be the Spirit’s first game without attacker Cheyna Mathews, who will be representing Jamaica in the World Cup.
The game will be broadcasted on NBC Sports Washington in addition to streaming on Monumental Sports Network and Yahoo Sports.
