Boyds, Md. (5/22/19) – Washington Spirit attacker Cheyna Mathews has been named to the Jamaican Women’s National Team’s roster for the 2019 FIFA World Cup in France this summer.
For Jamaica, Matthews last represented the Reggae Girlz in their two friendlies against Chile in early March. The forward tallied 66 minutes in the first friendly, and 45 in the second before being rotated off in both contests.
Spirit head coach Richie Burke had this to say on Williams’ selection: “Over the past 2 games Cheyna has really hit a nice vein of form and she will be sorely missed as we enter into a demanding part of our NWSL summer schedule.” He continued to say, “I’m thrilled for another of our Spirit players to get the worldwide exposure and incredible match experience that World Cup participation brings. I really hope she lights it up for Jamaica during the WWC and I know she will fly the Spirit flag with pride whilst away representing her country.”
“A mark of Cheyna’s character and commitment to our team was that the last thing she said to me was to make sure we were in a good place when she returns and that she was really going to miss our team, our environment and our players,” Burke said. “We will be doing our best to follow up on that request while cheering her on in France. We might even replicate her dancing goal celebration if she notches one for Jamaica!”

After sitting out in 2018 due to being pregnant with her son Josiah Matthews, the forward has appeared in every game this season for the Spirit. Matthews started the season strong with an assist in the Spirit’s season opener against Sky Blue FC, then followed up with an outstanding performance at Yurcak Field against Sky Blue FC in which she scored twice and won the NWSL Goal of the Week honor.
The Reggae Girlz qualified for the 2019 Women’s World Cup via the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship last Fall. The Jamaican team advanced past the group stage for the first time since 2006 and went on to defeat Panama in the third-place match, securing automatic qualification to the World Cup this summer. This Jamaica team is the first Caribbean country to ever qualify for a Women’s World Cup.
The Reggae Girlz will begin their World Cup run in the group-stages against Brazil on June 9, before facing Italy on June 14, and finally facing the top-ranked team in the group Australia on June 18.
