RICHMOND, Va. and Boyds, Md. (February 20, 2019) – Tickets are on sale now for the Washington Spirit’s preseason opener, coming up Saturday, March 16 (7 p.m. ET) in Richmond, Va. The Richmond Kickers’ City Stadium is slated to host the game between Washington and James Madison University.

Tickets are available now at Tickets.WashingtonSpirit.com and on RichmondKickers.com.

In partnership with the Richmond Strikers, the match will serve as the marquee game during the weekend’s prestigious Jefferson Cup Girls Weekend, which will host more than 5,000 players and 350 participating teams.

“We are extremely excited to once again host the Spirit from the very top pro women’s league,” commented Matt Spear, Kickers President. “Their team is stacked with world class talent, which is especially compelling as an entree to this summer’s World Cup. It’s great to again work with our friends the Richmond Strikers on another shared aspiration beyond Richmond United. It’s good to have an in-state NCAA Division I program James Madison for their institution’s exposure. The players, families, and coaches in Richmond for the March 16 weekend for the excellent Jefferson Cup showcase will enjoy not only the pros but also the college level where most of the smart, driven players aim. And this marquee match is an early example for many more exciting games and community events in 2019 at City Stadium.”

As Washington prepares for the upcoming 2019 NWSL season that kicks off the weekend of April 13-14 and on the heels of the U.S. Women’s National Team competing in the SheBelieves Cup, fans in Richmond will have the opportunity to watch some of the best female professional players in the world, including multiple U.S. Women’s National Team members and other international stars, compete at City Stadium.

“The Richmond Strikers and the Jefferson Cup are excited about the opportunity to once again partner with the Washington Spirit and Richmond Kickers to bring Women’s Professional soccer to City Stadium,” added Jay Howell, Richmond Strikers Executive Director.  “City Stadium will provide a fantastic fan and family experience for a great match up between the Spirit and the JMU Dukes.”

Washington boasts one of the league’s most exciting young rosters, including 2017 NWSL Rookie of the Year Finalist and U.S. international forward Mallory Pugh, 2018 NWSL overall number one draft pick  and U.S. international midfielder Andi Sullivan and U.S. international midfielder Rose Lavelle.

“Our game in Richmond last year during the Jefferson Cup was a huge success. At the time, it drew the biggest crowd to ever see us play other than the 2016 NWSL Championship,” said Chris Hummer, Washington Spirit President. “With the World Cup this year adding to the buzz, we know this is another great opportunity. We can’t thank the Kickers or Jefferson Cup enough for all their support of professional women’s soccer.”

The exhibition will be the second year in a row that a professional women’s team has played at City Stadium. Previously, City Stadium hosted the Spirit taking on the North Carolina Courage March 17, 2018, U.S. Women’s National Team exhibitions against South Korea on November 1, 2008, Iceland on October 8, 2006, and Brazil on September 20, 1998.
