BOYDS, MD (March 10, 2017) – The Washington Spirit has signed forward Lindsay Agnew and midfielder Meggie Dougherty Howard to contracts for the 2017 NWSL season. Per team and league policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

The Spirit acquired Agnew with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft in January. She has been part of the Canadian youth national program since the age of 16, and received her first call up to a senior national team camp in January 2017. The Ohio State co-captain was recently named to the team travelling to Portugal for the upcoming Algarve Cup. As a Team Canada youth, she won a silver medal at the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship in Guatemala, and also represented Canada at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Azerbaijan 2012 and the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014.

“Lindsay has great talent and potential,” said general manager and head coach Jim Gabarra. “With her recent call ups to National Team camp and to the Algarve Cup, she has created good positive momentum with Canada heading into preseason, and we look forward to having her join us.”

Agnew led the Buckeyes in 2016 with 10 goals and eight assists, while serving as the team co-captain. She concluded her career fourth in program history with 19 assists, and was named to the 2016 second team All-Big 10 selection and 2016 CoSIDA second team Academic All-American.

Dougherty Howard played on the Washington Spirit Reserves in 2015 and 2016 which won the USL W-League Championship in 2015 and the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) East title in 2016. Dougherty Howard shared the Washington Spirit Reserves goals lead (5) in 2016 and was named to the USL W-League All-League team in 2015. She attended U.S. Under-23 National Team camps in May 2016 and January 2017.

“Meggie gained tremendous experience with our club last summer,” said Gabarra. “She fit in immediately, and we feel fortunate that we could draft and sign her.”

The former Florida Gator was named SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player her senior year after registering an assist in each tournament match, including serving up the golden goal in the final. Dougherty Howard also recorded an assist or goal (or both) in each NCAA Tournament match. She started every match at defensive midfield in 2016, leading the Gators with 12 assists tied for second in goals with eight.
