Sydney FC – Franny Ordega

In a rematch of last year’s W-League Grand Final in Australia, current league leaders Sydney FC played to a 1-1 draw against last season’s champions Melbourne City FC on Sunday, January 8. After a scoreless first half, Sydney struck first early in the second half to take the 1-0 lead. Melbourne City kept pressing and an equalizer came in the form of player-coach Jess Fishlock who also plays for Seattle Reign FC. Spirit forward Franny Ordega started the match for Sydney FC. (Match Report) Last weekend, Sydney had a bye. The team still leads the W-League leading into its match in the penultimate weekend of regular season play against Newcastle Jets.

 

Western Sydney Wanderers – Katie Stengel

Western Sydney Wanderers went down two goals early in its match against Brisbane Roar on Friday, January 6 and was never able to recover. Tameka Butt scored two goals in the first six minutes and a third in the 74th minute to secure a hat trick for herself and the victory for the Roar. (Match Report) On Saturday, January 14 the Wanderers hit another bump in the road when the team lost 10-2 to Adelaide United. (Match Report).  Katie Stengel started and played both full matches for the Wanderers. Western Sydney will be looking to rebound against Canberra United this weekend. The match will be shown on ESPN3 Saturday at 10:25pm ET.
