Shelina Zadorsky, Stephanie Labbé, and Diana Matheson spent August making their country proud, winning an Olympic bronze medal for Canada at the Rio Olympic Games. Shortly after the Olympics, the bronze medalists were back in D.C. to help the Spirit clinch its first ever home playoff game.

The Canadian National Team and Spirit trio made a special visit to the Canadian Embassy on Wednesday where they received a hero’s welcome as guests of Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, Mr. David MacNaughton.

Canadian Spirit at the Canadian Embassy

Deputy Head of Mission to Canada’s Embassy, Mr. Denis Stevens, hosted an event honoring the Olympic medalists at the Embassy’s art gallery, drawing a large crowd of Embassy staff members.

Mr. Stevens introduced the players to the assembled staff and praised their grit, saying that young Canadians were inspired by their boldness and intelligence, both on the field and off. After a brief introduction, the bronze medalists took questions from the staff before posing for pictures and showing their medals.

The Spirit players also enjoyed a tour of the Embassy and were invited onto the terrace to enjoy a spectacular view of the city, including the nearby U.S. Capitol Building.

Posing with an inukshuk in the Embassy

While walking around the Embassy and taking pictures with an inukshuk or Canadian art, one thought became increasingly confirmed: you can take the Canadians out of Canada, but you’ll never take Canada out of the Canadians.

The Canadians and their Spirit teammates will play their last regular season game in Chicago on Saturday, September 24 before returning to the Maryland SoccerPlex on Friday, September 30 for the first home playoff match in franchise history. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, September 19 at 10 a.m. ET at tickets.washingtonspirit.com.

Special thank you to Mr. MacNaughton, Mr. Stevens, Stephen Elliot, and the rest of the Canadian Embassy staff for opening their doors to our Spirit Canadians. We hope to see you again soon!
